Buying Used Trucks For Zambia
Zambia has no fixed age limit for commercial vehicles, but it does require right-hand drive for public-road registration. That rules our left-hand-drive units out of ordinary civilian road use — but not out of mining, project haulage or cross-border transit work. Read this page before you enquire.
The market
Zambia is landlocked and served through Dar es Salaam, Walvis Bay or Durban, then overland through the Nakonde, Kasumbalesa or Chirundu border posts. Demand concentrates on tippers and tractor units for Copperbelt mining, road construction and agricultural haulage. Duty is not a simple percentage of CIF value: the Zambia Revenue Authority applies a specific duty schedule of fixed Kwacha amounts by body type, engine size and age band, with VAT and a carbon emission surtax on top. Pre-shipment roadworthiness inspection by a ZCSA-appointed agent is mandatory, and customs declarations must be lodged through ASYCUDA World before arrival.
Important — steering requirement. Zambia requires right-hand-drive vehicles for public-road registration. Under Regulation 19A of the Roads and Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use) (Amendment) Regulations, 1995 (Statutory Instrument No. 1 of 1995), left-hand drive vehicles may not be imported for registration in Zambia. Almost all used trucks traded out of China, including ours, are built left-hand drive. TANAN therefore supplies left-hand-drive units to Zambia for mining sites, internal haulage on large construction projects and cross-border transit trade only — not for ordinary public-road registration.
What this means if you are buying for Zambia
Zambia's steering requirement splits demand into two clear paths. If the truck has to be registered and driven on public roads, it must be right-hand drive from the factory: a left-hand drive unit cannot be registered, and converting one after arrival is not a realistic route. If the truck works inside a mine, on a construction site or in cross-border transit, a left-hand drive unit can be put to work on that basis. Tell us which of the two you are buying for, and we will answer straight.
We would rather say this than take your order
We could quote you a left-hand-drive HOWO for Zambia today, and if your plan is public-road registration it would fail at the border. What we will do instead is tell you plainly which use cases a left-hand-drive unit can serve in Zambia, and decline the order if none of them fits. If you also buy for Nigeria or Ghana, where left-hand drive is the requirement, the same unit is a normal supply.
What we have on the yard
Zambia requires right-hand drive, so our left-hand-drive stock is not registerable there. Rather than sell you a truck that will be refused at the port, we show you what we actually have.

Buying for Nigeria or Ghana instead?
Zambia and Nigeria sit on opposite steering requirements, and many traders in the region buy for both. If you also source for West Africa, we can quote from stock.
